Colin McPhillamy trained as an actor at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. He has acted, directed, produced, written, and taught. His first professional engagement was at the well known but remote Little Theatre on the Isle of Mull in The Hebrides where he performed a one-man version Henry V. He also toured this mini-Shakespearean production in Britain, the USA, and Australia. Other solo work includes An Actor Repairs, The Treehouse (nominated Best Actor, Edinburgh Festival), and Enoch Arden (with Geoffrey Tozer at the piano). In the UK, he was a member of the Chichester Festival Theatre company, The Old Vic (under Jonathan Miller), and The Royal National Theatre (under Richard Eyre). He has worked extensively regionally, in The West End and on television in the UK; In the USA he has appeared on Broadway in Waiting in the Wings (where he played opposite Lauren Bacall and Rosemary Harris), in Brian Bedford’s acclaimed production of The Importance of Being Earnest, Off-Broadway, and at major regional theaters including; The Guthrie in Minneapolis, The Mark Taper in Los Angles, The Alley in Houston among others. He has made festival and touring appearances in Australia, and joined the Sydney Theatre Company for Michael Blakemore’s production of Democracy. McPhillamy played Kent in an English-speaking production of King Lear in Beijing, returning there to teach English the following year. During the 1990s he was a regular contributor to BBC Radio of plays and short stories including two series of the financial caper comedy Capital Gains starring Peter Jones. His work was nominated for The Prix Italia and The Writer’s Guild Comedy Award, and published as The Tree House and Other Stories. In 2013 he published An Actor Walks into China, and in 2017, Actor Blog Plus.

Colin also practices as an astrologer.
